“Unprecedented” natural disaster still under investigation.
Oregon and Washington state officials have teamed up with the FBI to curb the misinformation spreading about the wildfires on the West Coast. Posts online accuse far-left and far-right extremists for starting the fires, but after investigation the FBI has found these to be unfounded theories.
Though some have attributed the rampant wildfires to climate change, multiple individuals have been arrested for arson in Washington, Oregon, and California. Ties to activist groups have not yet been discovered.
State officials have taken to social media to report and flag posts for spreading dangerous misinformation. As Seattle firefighter Matt Lowery wrote on Facebook last week; “It is hot, dry, and fire spreads quickly in those conditions. There is nothing to show its Antifa or Proud Boys setting fires. Wait for information.”
